The human body stores fat for a few different reasons, but overall it is for our own health. It is only when people consume excess amounts that it becomes a health issue. If you are wondering why does our body store fat, well the biggest reason for it is to later convert it into energy. Another reason the body stores a lot of fat is that when we do save it for a later time to use as energy, we often times don’t use all the energy made from it. If you don’t eventually burn off the fat you consume, it continues to build.

Our body has been developed over thousands of years to know that in times of scarcity, it needs to have a backup fuel source. Your body saves fat so that if your body is ever deprived of carbohydrates, it can use the fat as an alternative energy source. The reason some people end up saving more fat than others is that fatty acids aren’t the most preferred option for the body when it needs to make energy, so it is more of a last resort. This is also why it can be hard to lose body fat, because it burns carbs and proteins that were consumed prior to burning the body fat.

There are also a couple of other reasons we store fat that have nothing to do with what we eat. One example is for women only. Women tend to store more fat in the hip and thigh area in preparation for the reproduction process. Another example is that it’s necessary in order to process certain vitamins.

Obviously fat is not necessarily a bad thing for the human body; however, knowing what processes the body stores it for can help us develop a healthy balance so there isn’t a lack, nor a surplus, of it in the body.
